In 1985, the NBA fined Michael Jordan $5,000 every game for wearing the black and red Air Jordan 1 because it violated the league’s uniform policy. Nike paid every fine and turned the controversy into the most successful marketing campaign in sneaker history. The Jordan 1 Retro Bred Banned 2016 (555088-001) brought that shoe back in September 2016 with an “X” stamped on the heel and “BANNED” printed on the hang tag. The 2016 release was one of the largest Jordan 1 drops in history, but pairs still moved fast. Leather quality was solid, smooth and firm with a slight tumble on the black panels.
